Agenda:

Day 1:

We will meet in the breakfast room at the Best Western Plains Hotel in Wall, South Dakota at 3 P.M (Mountain Time).  After introductions and a review of the agenda, we will have a brief discussion about photographing night skies.  Then, weather permitting, we will head out to our first location for some night photography.

Day 2:

Plan for a sunrise shoot, then return to hotel for breakfast and a break. After reconvening, we will talk about the afternoon schedule and spend a bit of classroom time discussing what to expect and how to achieve it while photographing in the field later that afternoon.

We will have a late lunch and then head back out capture some more of the scenery and wildlife.  We will then finish up our shooting at sunset before heading in for dinner.

After dinner there will a break, even a bit of time for a nap, before we re-focus on night photography.  We will discuss the difficulties we found the night before and how to mitigate the challenges of photographing in the dark.  We will then head back out into the field for night photography. If there is in-climate weather, we will spend some time working on the day’s images, critiquing and answering any questions you may have.

Day 3:

Will be the same basic schedule as Sunday, with expansion on skills and techniques. We will spend classroom time working with Lightroom and Photoshop for an efficient workflow and editing techniques.  We will then head out into the field.

Day 4:

We will head out for sunrise, then return to hotel for breakfast. After a quick breakfast, we will finish packing for departure and check out of our rooms.  Before leaving, we will have a short talk about Custer State Park, the wildlife you may see there and photo techniques. After questions are answered, we will depart the hotel and drive to Custer State Park. Wednesday night will be spent in 433 West Mount Rushmore Road, Custer SD 57730. Reservations: 1-888-HOLIDAY or the hotel directly at: 1-605-673-2500.

  • Sturdy Tripod

  • Fast wide-angle lens for night photography.
  • Medium telephoto lens (70 – 200mm zoom lens to work well)
  • Large telephoto for wildlife (150-600mm if you have it). You can also use an extender.
  • Microfiber Towel and lens cloths.
  • Flashlight/headlamp
  • Rain Protection for Camera – unless it is lightning, we will shoot in the rain.
  • Rain Gear for you (in case of rain)
  • Sunscreen
  • Layered Clothing
